2010 Starboard Futura - Freeride

Model: FUTURA - FREERIDE

Description: The Futuras: the pure freeride boards that combine stability and ease of use with the widest wind range and the highest top end performance in its group. Blurring the lines between free-slalom boards and freeride boards, the Futuras are also, astonishingly, the most easy freeride boards in their group. This thanks to extra width and their ability to automatically deliver peak performance across a wide sweet spot. Starboard Futuras were recently introduced in the World's leading windsurfing centre. Starboard started the season with 30% of customer's bookings while the other 70% booked established offerings. By the end of the season, the bookings changed to 70%, even up to 90% for Starboard. The Futuras' impossible combination of maximum performance with the easiest and most stable shape made it the simple choice.

What's new for 2010
New cutaway shapes that reduce the wetted surface area without losing width under your back foot: a more efficient planing surface that delivers more speed and quicker acceleration, but without loss of control, stability or power. Futura 101, 111, 122, 133, 141 and 155.

New wingers that create more width between your feet, less width in the tail: a more efficient planing surface for a higher top end speed and quicker acceleration. Futura 122, 133, 141 and 155.

New nose shape on the Futura 122 and 133 that have been tweaked to offer improved balance: the 122 has a slightly narrower nose and the 133 has a slightly wider nose. Both are a touch longer than last year.

The Futura 141 has also been thinned down further compared to last year, to provide a more responsive, sporty and controllable ride with the same levels of ease, stability and comfort.

New Freeride Glide fin that delivers less drag, more speed and spin-out free grip (Futura 93, 101, 111, 122).

Futura Tufskins are delivered in test winning 09 shapes.

Wood offers the best control, the highest level of dynamic shape stability and increased comfort at a very light weight. The unidirectional Australian pine wood sheet of 0.6mm thickness wraps the entire board, deck and bottom, to form a stiff and rigid shell that is also tough and impact resistant.

TechnoraTM offers the best balance between strength, weight, stiffness and affordability. The 2010 Technora? models also now come in a custom look, for a custom board effect but more importantly, to save a hundred grams of weight in paint.

The Tufskin models are the toughest option and also the most affordable with the highest weight. The Tufskin 122, 133, 141 and 155 also include additional intermediate footstrap options.

WoodCarbon offers the lightest weight of all with a stiffer construction that offers quicker acceleration in lighter winds. Unidirectional, ultra light and flat woven carbon is used for maximum stiffness and minimum weight.

Special note on the Futura WoodCarbons - they are staggered into two groups: the Futura 122 and smaller are built with a carbon deck and a wood bottom to achieve a blend between stiffness and control, as these boards are used mainly in medium to high wind strengths. In high winds, control is more important than stiffness.

The Futura 133 and larger are built in carbon both deck and bottom, as these boards are mainly used in lighter winds. In lightwinds, weight and stiffness are the more important factors. All WoodCarbon boards feature a wood spine on the deck to add structural rigidity and shock-absorbing and vibration-damping effect.

2010 Starboard Kode - WaveFreestyle

Model: KODE - WAVEFREESTYLE

Description: A decade of wave, freeride and freestyle R&D has evolved to bring you the Kodes of today. The perfect blend of speed and aggressiveness, with maximum maneuvering versatility and pure carving pleasure: for wave riding, free styling; for the side shore waves of Cabo Verde to the choppy waters and beach breaks of Mui Ne, Vietnam.

Designed by the team of Tiesda You, Svein Rasmussen, Jim Drake, Sven Akerboom, Scott McKercher, Kevin Pritchard, Boujmaa Guilloul and freestyle specialists Taty Frans, Nicolas Akgazciyan and Kiri Thode, the extensive Kode R&D team proudly introduce the 2nd generation Kodes.

At the PWA Wave event in Cabo Verde, Kevin Pritchard used a stock 2010 Kode 80 and took 3rd place overall. The best place finish for a production board since Scott’s PWA Wave title on a stock Evo in 2004.

“The red rocket was a favorite of many testers. Better than the fleet at: Doing everything well, from free sailing to wave–riding.” Windsurfing USA, April 2009.

What’s new for 2010?
Kode 74: extra vee was added under the back foot to the tip of the tail, to loosen up the board and allow it to carve a larger variety of turns. It wave rides more vertically without sacrificing speed or acceleration.

Kode 86, 94, 103: the tail outlines have been pinned out and narrowed down at the very tip. This allows these Kodes to carve a larger variety of turns, including tighter, snappier ones. Extra volume and deck dome was pumped into the rails in the tail and under the back heel, to provide a more domed shape and offer more float in the carves: more control, more grip and more forgiving turns. With the very thin rails along the rest of the board, the aggressive and fast carving nature of the Kodes remain.

Kode 112: like the three smaller sizes, extra deck dome and rail volume in the tail have been added, to give the back foot more grip and more control. With more rail volume in the tail, carving and turning becomes more forgiving, with more float to carry out of the turn, yet the aggressive and fast carving nature remains thanks to the thinner rails on the rest of the board.

Special features on the Kode 68, 74, 80: Heel bumpers; double insert screws for the back foot.

Special features on the Kode 86, 94, 102, 112, 122: No heel bumpers for a lighter and more direct feel; Inboard and outboard insert position options.

New fins: for waves, G10 is out, polyester is in. The test team of four riders – Scott McKercher, Cyril Moussilmani, Svein Rasmussen, Boujmaa Guilloul - were unanimous: polyester versions of the Natural Wave fin series outperformed the G10 originals, by providing a more responsive flex that allows the fin to breathe and deliver more power with more grip.

Technora™, Wood or WoodCarbon? The Kode 68, 74, 80 and 86 are built in a new upgraded WoodCarbon construction that uses biaxial flat-weave carbon layers and a full Wood bottom with double sandwich for extra strength.

Kode 94, 103, 112 WoodCarbon uses a combination of a wood spine and ultralight 80g carbon: the composite material matrix that has set the new benchmark. This technology is the first board construction in the World to utilize an ultralight carbon fibre that is flat-weaved for total mechanical efficiency. The unidirectional flat-weave fibre generates equal tensile strength as biaxial or woven carbon fibre, yet at half the specific weight. A layer of 0.6mm Australian pine wood runs along the spine of the board to provide rigidity, additional structural integrity and to increase strength.

The Wood and Technora™ versions continue with constructions that have been refined over a decade to provide the industry’s leading warranty figures and the most reliable lightweight boards to date. The Kode 68, 74 and 80 are built to Dur-X standards: double sandwich construction, oversized reinforcements and on the Wood Dur-X models, there is a full 0.6mm wood skin (deck and bottom) for maximum rigidity, strength and dynamic shape integrity.

2010 Starboard Quad - Qaud Wave

Model: Quad - Qaud Wave

Description: The World’s first Quad fin wave boards - more drive, more traction, the ability to generate more speed on the wave face, turn closer and tighter, ride more vertical with the ability to go where you want, when you want. When going out through waves, the Quads also help you to stay upwind better than single or twin fin boards, thus positioning you to catch more waves.

The Quad wave concept was born 2 years ago when Svein Rasmussen and Scott McKercher first started working with Quad fin setups on wave SUP boards, initially with single fin setups to thrusters and finally Quad fins. The unique fin size combination, with the larger fin in front and the smaller fin behind, as well as the exact fin box positioning, the fin foil/stiffness ratio and the fin box selection were the key in making the Quad concept work.

What does a Quad set up offer?
Quads produce an enormous amount of drive. There’s a lot of fin area spread out over the tail, so when you push the fins, they work together to channel the water’s energy into the board. They create extra drive and speed and they can do this whether you’re making long drawn-out turns, or tight squirty turns. Go where you want, when you want and generate more speed on the wave face. Ride faster, ride more vertical.

Why is the front fin larger than the back fin?
Starboard SUP and also surfboard shapers have been utilizing quads for some time now, with many high profile surfers such as Kelly Slater experimenting with these designs. Starboard R&D have tried nine different fin setups multiplied by different stiffness configurations and found that there was a lot of extra drive and a quicker board-turning initiation created by having a set of larger fins forward of a set of smaller back fins. The front fins have a size tuning range from 16 to 11cm.

For the convertibles: when to choose the single fin set up and when to choose the quad fin set up?
Choose the single fin for more bump and jump scenarios and Quads to for pure wave orientated sailing.

Why Surfinz and Mini Tuttle fin boxes?
Surfinz boxes are light and compatible with FCS but give more strength and the ability to further fine tune the fin placement by 8 mm. Mini Tuttle boxes are light and strong enough to hold bigger fins. Basically, the weight of two Surfinz boxes and two Mini Tuttle boxes are about the same as one US box: Quad boards would weigh the same as a single fin wave board. In convertible form, the Quad would weigh the same as a twin fin wave board.

Special note:
Mini-Tuttle wave fins may not be readily available in stores, so Starboard distributors are stocked up on spare Quad 16 and Quad 17 fins. Simply call if you need a new one.

2010 Starboard Rio - all round progressive

Model: Rio & Rio Sport

DESCRIPTION: Bridging the gap between planing boards and lightwind longboards, blurring the line between stable entry level boards and progressive freeride boards, the Rio is the board that covers the widest scope of users in all wind conditions: windsurfing for everyone, every time and everywhere.

Its long and wide shape provides plenty of stability for even the most nervous beginners, and also a fast, smooth glide in light winds. For advanced riders, the longer, narrower shape combined with the inboard heel-recesses and a soft daggerboard allows the board to power upwind off the leeward rail.

As the wind speed increases, the Rio's unique wide tail derived from Formula racing boards provides the early planing, the high speeds and the high performance racing fun that have made it a best seller in the all-wind windsurfing category.

The Rio's unique features:

  • Contour Deck: makes it easy for everyone to progress into the straps, and easy to rail upwind for advanced windsurfers.
  • Clipperbox daggerboard: the easiest and most functional daggerboard system. The clip system makes it smooth and easy to operate. Totally sand-proof, strong and reliable
  • Rigid rubber lips: back-plated with L-shaped plastic strips, this unique system prevents any water from gushing through the daggerboard case when the daggerboard is retracted: easier to plane, and faster planing speeds.
  • A wide and long shape, with a wide tail: stable at slow speeds, fast to glide and transitions smoothly from non-planing to planing.
  • 57cm soft-flex daggerboard: generates powerful lift, providing high performance upwind ability, speed and racing fun.

The standard Rio with its full EVA deck remains the same as the 2009 model. For 2010, two new technology options are introduced.

The new Starboard Rio Sport:

The lighter, high performance version of the Rio all-wind windsurf board. With Starboard's exclusive Star Touch deck finish, the EVA deck is replaced with a layer of textured PU clear that gives the deck a smooth, non-abrasive coating that grips when wet. Unlike traditional non-slip coatings, the Star Touch deck won't irritate or cut your skin.

Ideal for windsurfers looking for a lighter first-buy board and windsurfing centres who want a more UV resistant finish than EVA soft deck.

The new Rio ARMOUR TECH:

Built in the World's toughest board construction, the Rio Armour Tech is lighter and even tougher than polypropylene boards (as tested by German SURF magazine, April 2009)
